About Mumbai

Dubbed as 'The City of Dreams', Mumbai or formerly Bombay as it is still fondly referred to has been rated as one of the Places of a Lifetime by National Geographic's Traveller magazine. Amongst the must-visits which top the list is Gateway of India, built to commemorate the visit of King George V and Queen Mary to Bombay in 1911, which is a starting point for most tourists. Next on the cards should be a visit to Elephanta Caves, famous for its ornate cave temples which is easily accessible through the boats which sail every half an hour from the Mumbai harbour. Much has been said and heard about the Mumabi local trains, the lifeline of the city, so a trip to Mumbai would be incomplete without a ride on it. For the ones interested, there are Reality Tours organized to visit Dharavi, the biggest slum in India. Marine Drive, synonymous with Mumbai, depicted beautifully in the recent movie Wake Up Sid, the boulevard in South Mumbai, is a 3km long C- stretch along the coast which is often frequented by both locals and tourists alike in the evenings to escape the fast-paced humdrum of city life. To talk about Mumbai, and not mention Juhu beach is almost sinful though it is definitely not the most relaxing of beaches but offers sumptuous streetfood such as bhelpuri and vadapav to gorge on. Mumbai is a shopper's paradise and is also home to Inorbit, one of Asia's largest malls. For the local markets, such as Fashion Street, bargaining skills are a must and Zaveri Bazaar is worth a glimpse at least for the beautiful jewellery it offers. You wouldn't need to worry about booking accommodation here, thanks to the enormous area over which the city is spread; economy, budget, dormitories, you name it and you will get it all here.
